Anatomy: Hands

I've been working on understanding the subtleties of hands and the various creases that make up the male palm. It's a starting point for better hands for Lisa. I figure once I get a good man's hand down, I can tweak it in for a softer female version. So this is my 4th attempt at a hand and I think I've discovered most of the major creases. The only thing I havren't decided about is the two major viens on the top (not shown here). They're usually pretty pronounced on men, but almost invisible on women.

Ah well, we'll see. This hand is actually my 4th try at making good hands, the first were pretty bad. These pics shown the hands pretty zoomed in, I doubt a normal pic would be made this close, but just to shown you what else I've been cooking up in the kitchen..

try to ignore the wierd black poly.. mental ray is tripping out for some reason I gotta find out what the problem is..

Really good. Best advice I can give you is to **** up the thumb a little. God knows mine makes an almost complete semi-circle. Also, those veins only pop up on my hands when I'm finished exercising. Most of the time, they're practically imperceptible.

D**n that looks good, the only nit that I have is that the knuckles are a little too pronounced. Great work dude.

General Phoenix March 6th, 2003 10:48 PM

Well, I think the knuckles will look better when textured properly - the lighting seems to be making them look more pronounced than they are.

I assume the veins you're referring to are the ones just forward of the wrist, on the back of the hand?

JasonA March 7th, 2003 09:19 AM

Bernardo, I'm not sure what to replace **** with :p ok seriously, do you mean the curvature of the inside of the thumbon the last two segments? I think I see what you mean as I look at my own..

tgg, good point. I'll go back and tone down the knuckle wrinkles, they are kinda bulging aren't they? also I'll try to tweak them a bit more individually so they don't look so obviously similair..

GeneralP, yes those are the viens I'm thinking of.. on my (left) hand I have one set on the left side which "y"'s near the knuckles and another vien on the right side which kind goes diagoinally from my middle finger knucke to the base of my thumb.. but its like Bernardo said, its not massively noticable and it probably varies from person to person. if yo uforce your hand into this position, how noticable is it on yours?

Thanks for the comments guys, every bit helps:)

I went back and made some minor corrections to things several people had suggested. I think it helped it quite a bit although its mostly pretty subtle stuff. Let me know what you guys think of the hands in their current state. Oh, I still haven't fixed that little brown poly. Its something in the renderer..

What do you guys think?

Excellent work Jason. The knuckles look a little strange, but like GP, I'll reserve my judgement until you finish the textures.

Very nice work, Jason :)

Thanks guys! Yes texturing them would make a major difference, but I'm, not sure if I'll bother with these hands. Its more of a study for hands in general. The next set will be a more female version that I can attach to lisa. I did a bunch of little tweaks to these hands including added some skin folds between the thumb and index finger, bent each of the fingers a bit and added some tendon action just below the wrist as well as a few other minor things.

Let me know what you think, comments and critiques are of course most welcome

I think it's perfect as it is now.

Can't wait to see the female version.

Looks great!

Although it does look like you have a missing polygon on that forefinger....:D

Status?

JasonA April 24th, 2003 07:00 PM

the hands were finished about a month ago. I posted a final pic of the model in the finished section. Its untextured and kinda hanging..

Next set will be alot less modeled detail, and much more practical.. I really went overboard on this set but I wanted to see how far I could go.
