Leaving "Blue MArble"

Seems my originall usernam,e and password went "down the drain" so to say when these forums were remade... The original image contained Ralph's Sovvie mesh in it, but since I saw Isisdor's mesh, I just knew I had to update the image... The Earth mesh is by me, and the Sovvie by Isidor (Creditcs on the bottom of the image;they are a bit less vissible, but they are there)... Btw... the Warp grill and bussard textures are my own (procedural textures, nothing to it)... and I've adedd some more specularity to the hull... The image is a full Max 4.2 render, 0 post processing... Enjoy |

The image looks spot-on amazing in most respects, but there seems to be a very "EBOLII-ish" perspective problem with the ship ... the nacelles look closer to the camera than the primary hull.

Katana... that's because of the FOV camera setting... using a number 30 setting it tends to do that...but that setting also shows the ship the best...:) I'm not gonna change anything as I like it this way ;) |
I didn't notice the FOV problem until Katana pointed it out - I can live with it. :)

The Earth is a great model. I'm a little confused about the sun reflection so close to the terminator, or am I seeing this wrong?

He's referring to a frequent Depth of Field problem in some of Ebolii's previous W.I.P. images. I didn't notice it very often myself, but I did enjoy the discussions that resulted from it... :)

Hey I can live with artistic choice, I am the worlds biggest advocate of the right of the artist to do as he/she sees fit, particulary against what others might say.
The reason I have dubbed this particular perspective choice as "EBOLIIish" is because in my discussions with that wonderfully tallented young lad he would always vow to "correct" the perspective and then have it even more pronounced in his next image *lol* Personally this kind of disregard for perspective is like nails on a chalkboard, destroying any and all "suspension of disbelief" which is IMO crucial to the success of the image. Of course all this is my opinion and I defer to the artist's judgement when it comes to "taste" :) |
I don't see any perspective distortion. The picture looks great.
Only one thing... Im kind of new, so I need to know. What's up with the trek mania in this forum. Did I miss a fine print somewhere? |
Most of the artists here started with and/or are currently working in the Trek genre, however 3DG is not limited to any particular genre.
I hope that isn't a problem for you. ;) As for the perspective, as I said it is a matter of "taste" :) |

I respect it...:) Though I've been using this FOV setting in all of my latest images and it always served me well... and I also believe that it's the same FOV setting used in movies in shows...:) the nacelles may look bigger... but yo should remmember that it's only a still image... when I animate this, it's gonna look a tad bette ;) |

Deks: How did you get the effect of the Planetary glow that surrounds the earth, I am playing about with an earth mesh myself, the mesh I have does look good but it could be better...thanks

Don't worry, Sharky. This place is for artists of all kinds - there's even a thread featuring sculptures here. As much as we love Trek here, we also love art in general, so you'll never need to worry about your work being ignored.
Especially not with the talent you've already displayed in your recent posts. :) |

yes... I like my shots and meshes in them to be half lightghted with Main light and the rest of it with ambient lighting... :) to rephrase myself, it's better when you post a render of a mesh lighted in that fashion as it looks a bit better than on showing the fully bright side of the mesh... Red_ufo you mean the atmosphere ? ah... Can't go into details as I don't remember all of the setings from memory... But... I did wrote a tutorial on how I did this Earth...;) |
