Goodbye Desert Planet

http://www.dfki.de/~kroener/ray/pictures/Desert01.jpg

Goodbye, sand, dust, and dryness - goodbye desert planet! Time to come up with a SciFi pic again. Since most of my latest pictures relied on some water effects, a desert seemed to be the right background. The spaceships are assembled from some of my previous vessels, and use a mix generic textures provided by Vue d'Esprit. Thanks for viewing!

ed. 14-07-2003: picture recomputed with higher AA value

Very nice indeed. I've always liked Vue rendered work, it's a nice little program.

I like It, I like It allot, I use Bryce myself but Vue d'Esprit or Bryce both programs are excellent for producing images like yours, excellent pic...cheers

Thank you for the nice feedback!

Red_ufo

Yes, it's a kind of "classic" Vue/Bryce picture, an outdoor scene with mountains :) But what I really learned to like is the ease of creating generic textures. Very cool.

The scene is very beautiful and inspiring.
But the renderer is just awful. It looks like the pic has no antialiasing and the shadows are terrible. The image looks like it has been gif-compressed. It just ruins the otherwise beautiful scene.

Katana July 7th, 2003 06:07 AM

I'd have to disagree with that Sharky, the image is quite lovely. Very impressive especially for a bargain 3D software package ... the entire image gives a rather wonderful nostalgic feel akin to the cover art from older SF novels.

ST-One July 7th, 2003 06:35 AM

I agree with Katana.

The image has a Perry-Rhodan-Feeling.

Quite nice.

Sharky

Anti-Aliasing/Shadows: no GIF compression here, just some loss of quality because of JPG. However, I tried higher degree of AA (Ultimate, this is Final), which actually improved the edges and the shadows of the bushes. But that mode resulted also in a tough render-bug of the planet, thus I had to keep it as it is... waiting for the next patch... :-/

Katana/ST-One

Indeed, with respect to its price, Vue is -my opinion- hard to beat.

During the creating I read actually a lot of Perry Rhodan magazines (had to catch up the current state). Maybe that had some impact :-)

WOW, it's fantastic! I definately like the bird. It kinda reminds me of those ships taking off in Star Wars 2. Not exactly, but they took off from the desert planet, so that's why it came into my head.

Fantastic image though!

Sharky July 8th, 2003 11:05 AM

As I said. It's a very beautiful scene. I can't imagine what you'll do with the best software.

akroener July 10th, 2003 03:12 AM

Thanks again for the nice feedback!

moovok: in fact , when I started I had the idea of a Tatooine-like scene with a spaceport. Then I saw some excellent pictures of Monument Valley, and wanted to have such rocks as well. Hence the scenery has changed a lot, but the buildings in the foreground still remember to the original SW concept - they were created with the T. desert farms in mind :)
