Galactica Conversion

wjaspers over at SciFi Meshes had created the remake Galactica in Max format.

Wanting to blow that ship up ( :D ), I converted it to Lightwave format.

Mind you, this is a straight up conversion, using the textures from the Max version.

Kai July 9th, 2004 06:02 PM

let it go man.. just let it go...
leave all that bad feeling over at Colonial Fleets and let the rest of us get on with our lives..

nice pic tho..

Darrell Lawrence July 9th, 2004 06:10 PM

....hmmm Sounds to me like someone else needs to let it go.

Darrell Lawrence July 9th, 2004 06:11 PM

I added a smiley just for you, Kai.

Kai July 9th, 2004 06:13 PM

"Wanting to blow that ship up" your words not mine... nuff said huh?

Darrell Lawrence July 9th, 2004 06:21 PM

Yeah, so what? Lots of artists like to blow ships up.

I like to blow up Basestars too... and Cylon Raiders.

So wtf is *your* problem?

Ryoken3D July 9th, 2004 06:34 PM

Children, play nice :p

Nice mesh, but ugh.. I never saw the remake ep, or the ship before, and let me say, ick.. Oh well.. to each their own :)

fulcrum July 10th, 2004 12:13 PM

I prefer the original Battlestar Galactica shape... But that is a nice mesh.

Darrell Lawrence July 10th, 2004 02:48 PM

The Lightwave version is now available:

Enjoy.

Hey Warrior,

Great conversion!!! Do the Hangar bays, retract?

Also I can't seem to register on your site. I get a Java Error.

Darrell Lawrence July 11th, 2004 02:44 PM

Java, or javascript?

Can you show me a screen grab of what the screen looks like when you try?

Darrell Lawrence July 11th, 2004 02:45 PM

...oh, and in this conversion version, no, they don't retract.

But that'd be easy to fix in LW modeler (which is what I'm doing in the LW 8 version) :)

Here's what I get: (unfortunately I can't attach anything) But here's what I got (ed. I was able to register at the time of this message ;)

Glad you could register :) I went looking for the problem as soon as I saw yur post, and found it: I accidently removed a code from the script header.

Put it back in, and viola'!

skyhawk223 July 12th, 2004 06:05 AM

Looks good to me.

[QUOTE=Warrior]Someone over at SciFi Meshes had created the remake Galactica in Max format.

Someone over at Scifi Meshes is also a member here, lol.

Nice conversion, and nice pic.

Darrell Lawrence July 12th, 2004 08:10 PM

DUDE!

Thanks :)

I never did check: Did you win the Challenge that brought this mesh about?

Mike Wright July 18th, 2004 10:23 PM

Dude I don't even recall seeing a post, or any WIPs over there... I mean I was working on this thing, I'd gotten the main body done and was moving onto the launch bays when suddenly I see the thing up for download at SFM. Totally caught me off guard. This dude is one hell of a modeler. He craps out these things faster than I can blink. I threw out a challange for a pilot for my viper, and like less than a day later he replies with pictures of the thing nearly finished. Incredible.

Darrell Lawrence July 19th, 2004 08:12 AM

Caught me off guard when I saw it there for DL too :)

*wonders what other suprises wjaspers has up his sleeve*

mikala August 9th, 2004 07:01 PM

Thank you for making it available. Looks like long render times coming up!

Darrell Lawrence August 10th, 2004 11:52 AM

Actually, the LW version *doesn't* take that long to render!

mikala August 10th, 2004 05:39 PM

My machine and lighting are what is killing render times for me.

Darrell Lawrence August 11th, 2004 08:13 AM

Mines an "oldie" compared to what's out there these days too ;)

General Phoenix August 11th, 2004 08:22 PM

Well, Darrell, if you need some new hardware, I've got all sorts of stuff lying around the place. You'd be surprised what I get from some of my clients.

Client - "Now that I've got this new system, could you just get rid of the old one for me?"

Me - "F***in' A! I mean - sure..."

Then, of course, there's all the stuff I have left over after my own upgrades.

Right now, I've got three 512 MB memory sticks, a brand new motherboard with a 2.4GHz P4 on it, and a couple of very nice 256MB video cards that aren't compatible with my new system. (Damned PCI Express slot...)

And I'm still not satisfied with what I've got! :D

Darrell Lawrence August 12th, 2004 07:57 AM

a 2.4GHz P4....
*cries*

Dennis August 25th, 2004 06:57 AM

That's a nice mesh. How many polys is that thing -- I imagine the ribs must pile them on.

I like the design of the ship from overhead, particularly the unusual approach to detailing. Not real fond of the underside, which I notice that the effects guys, uh, "underplay".

Cant post images on this site (or I dont know how), and I have no site of my own, but there are images at scifi-meshes from my 2003 centurion and 2003 cylon raider in the 3d-art section. Wanted to blow up some of Mike Wright his vipers, but they are made in max4.3, and I work with max3.0. So I have to wait for some zoic renders (front, top, etc) from the viper MVII (I know Mike is waiting for them too, lol) so I can create that one to battle the cylon raiders. Meanwhile I am doing some Borg stuff, and slowly working on the 2003 cylon basestar.

No, the ribs have not that many polys, made them with AutoCad, the real polycount comes from the little details. Thought the whole mesh was something about 700.000 polys, but it renders real quick in max, and as Warrior said it seems to render quick in LW.

Dont know about the polycount in LW, maybe Warrior can answer that.

wjaspers - You may feel free to use the Gallery as a host for your images. I've created a "Works In Progress" category in the Gallery for those of you who do not have your own webspace. Once you're done with a project, you can just delete the files you no longer need. :)

For a quick guide to Uploading, just check out the main news item on the 3DG frontpage.
