There's probably a happy medium somewhere between leaving credits off the image, and covering up an eighth of the image with huge honking credits like:
<font size="+3">IMAGE BY JOHN WHORFIN</font><br /><font size="+2">Thermal Pod Mesh by JOHN BIGBOOTÉ</font><br /><font size="+2">Oscillation Overthruster Mesh by JOHN GOMEZ</font><br /><font size="+2">Watermelon Mesh by JOHN SMALL BERRIES</font>
Perhaps the images could be marked with something a bit more sedate than the usual 36- to 48-point credits -- like 10- or 12-point text? That way, the artist is still credited, but the viewer can enjoy the picture without as much of a distraction.
(Additional suggestion: how about including a client-side image map which defines the area containing the credits as a link leading to the artist's homepage?)
