It's all about material settings and lighting, bro. I've spent whole days just watching episodes of Enterprise on DVD and studying the lighting on the FX shots. (Yeah, that's why I watched that many episodes in a row...

One big thing that tS 4 has over tS3 is that you can spec map in it, though I had to ask scifieric how to do it. It's kinda one of those things you've gotta be shown how to do, unless you're a freakin' tS wizard, because there's no shader specifically for spec mapping.
