3 D CGI Destiny - WIP

Hi all..
First post here...am hoping for some comments on the "esc Destiny". A little background...

The idea for Destiny right now is to make it an Internet series. It takes place around 2078 (given a few nice discoveries in theoretical physics). The Destiny is an exploration vessel and was funded by independent businesses (Earth Space Consortium). The driving force behind Destiny is myself and Mike Glover. Destiny is his concept and the modeling has been done by me (Dan Nobles). Please let me know what you think so far!!! And I will be happy to try to answer any questions you might have. Thanks!

The basic model with no texture...ONE BIG ANTENNA ARRAY...

A close-up of the Antenna array (has been scaled down in later versions)

A fully rendered front view:

A full perspective view...

Some of the things you are seeing here are (from left to right)...the slight glow of the bridge viewscreen...the dome of the tactical room...the large dome is the arboretum...the Com Antenna seen in the previous shot and then at the end is a huge dish patterned after the Arecebo Observatory in Puerto Rico...I will post some detail shots of these if there is any interest.

Must be a bright viewscreen if you can see the effects from this distance. Not bad so far, but missing detail outside of the antenna array. Does this ship carry any shuttles? If so, throw some shuttle bays in there. Perhaps other access hatches? a registry and/or other markings?

Hi, and thanks for the comments. There is a big shuttlebay on the underbelly that aren't seen from these shots. Working on access hatches and decals.

This site is pretty much dead, isn't it?

Not dead - hibernating perhaps, but certainly not dead.

Now, I'm not a modeller myself, but it seems that this is a rather low-poly mesh. Fine for distance shots, but if you want to do any close-ups or beauty shots, you may find yourself wanting a more detailed version.

That said, I like the overall design. You might want to experiment with the intensity of the glows, but it's a very nice shape.

Any chance we could hear more about the series itself - how it's being presented, that sort of thing?

Details are good. General Phoenix is right in his low poly comment. It needs more. More polys, more detail. Keep up the work.

Hibernating... more like the sleeping beauty.

Got a prince?

On the picture - I'm completely oblivious of 3d, but my first thought was "that saucer needs to be round, not octagonal"

Hi all,

Thanks everybody for the comments!

Details are coming. The Hull is still WIP. I have just been busy making some of the major structures (arboretum, com array, shuttlebay, interior bridge and workstations, etc.)

On the comment about the "saucer"...I'm guessing you mean the forward diamond shape. The ship is intentionally designed to stay away from "curves" and the pretty, sleek looking ships of the Star Trek world.

A little more info on the series...hmmm...okay...
Not much I can say except it is in a very early concept stage. We would like to present a full episode in at least nice quality DIVX, broken up into downloadable chunks. From there, if there is interest, we will make more (we will probably make more anyway...Destiny is very close to our hearts). We are looking at several CGI character animation possibilites and trying to make that perfect balance between budget and quality. We actually have a concept on an entirely new story-telling method and we are running some tests. If it pans out, I think viewers will find it innovative, original and refreshing.
As for the story itself...a little beyond what I already wrote if anyone is interested at this point:
The esc Destiny Project was funded by a few very large businesses located in several major countries....as was most of the space program infrastructure in place in the year 2078. The thing that makes Destiny special is that it represents a Quantum Leap (pardon the expression, but it is a valid one) in theoretical hyperspace travel. Due to the realization of solved equations that were once just theory, it is now possible to do some REAL scientific exploring. That is the Destiny's purpose, but one crewmember specifically placed on board by the Earth Space Consortium (ESC) is there to make sure that she is also profitable...searching out possible mining areas and possibilites of precious ore. The captain is often torn between the awe of scientific discovery and this guy with dollar signs breathing down his neck....but that's just one of the little on-going things. I know with just this little tidbit, it probably seems kind of boring, but we have lots of great plans. Whether they will ever see fruition, time will tell. But as long as it is a fun project to work on and budget doesn't kill us, we will keep going.
