Default TS 5 - First Combat Report

Having just gotten my copy of TS5 at last... all I can say is... OMG!! What have they done to it??????

intial reaction -

all the buttons have moved. most TSX's don't work anymore.
slow. easy to crash. to much dependance on Widgets.

after spending 2 hours trying to find buttons I use the most, (Eye view controls, Point Edit tools, Bevel etc)

I went back to TS 4.3 and have not loaded 5 again.

I know ppl are gonna disagree with me... but.. I hate it.

gimme 4 anytime.. at least I don't crash that so much!

I agree! the biggest thing was the slow down (not comp slowdown, just more steps) on the polygon draw tools. no longer can you just draw, right click and draw again. you have to create a nurbs curve (it's still just luck if i manage to get the shape to close) sweep it and then click on the buttons again.

pretty much the main thing i use it for is rendering. if i have a scene I just save a different copy of it (because TS5 will corrupt your TS$ files, so never feed it the origional one!) render it and then get rid of it.

can't stand the new interface... :p

*raises hand*

Kai, I totally agree, I opened it once, tried modelling for about an hour, closed it went back to 4.2, reformatted my machine, didn't bother re-installing it.

I probably will get to using 5 once I have the time to relearn the interface.

One thing I do like about it though, is the option to have the menus 'popping up'

It has been relatively stable for me. In fact, I think it only crashed my machine once. just an FYI, there is a free patch on the Caligari website that upgrades to 5.1.

I haven't found it all too difficult to learn, but that is probably because I really didn't have the time to get comfortable with 4.3 since I didn't have it for that long.

Default LOLOLOLOLLOOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kaibach you just got it!

lolol
[sorry]

I've had mine for over 4 months now and am happy with it.
[especially with the .1 patch]

My ONLY major gripe is the VERY poor implementation of SubDivision Surfaces. THAT was the biggest reason I bought 5.0.

I suggest that you read the manuel though and make your own interface like I did. I'm still tweaking it but it's worth it!

I am reading the manual lol

but where have the 2d poly tools gone? the closest I've found are tools to make NURBS

they ain't what I want lol... I need the ability to make 2d Polys! eg circles..traced hull lines.. etc

this does not bode well.....

Well, I started with a trial of trueSpace 5 and got already a bit used to the interface. But there are some really disturbing bugs ... the intersect tool won't work with some more complex models, for example, although the geometry of both objects was pretty clean. Sean was even able to reproduce the error. And no, I don't mean that the intersection itself was going to be complex - it's just about the pure face count of one of the objects. It drove me crazy.

I'll try out the 5.1 patch, if it doesn't work for me I'll give tS 4.3 a closer look. After all the most trueSpacers are suggesting that, I assume.

Yes the 5.1 patch is worth getting.

It really stablies the program.

Default 2d poly tools

Hiya Kai,
You can use the Nurbs tools to make the 2d profiles, then use the "Convert Nurbs Patch to Polyhedron" icon (looks like 2 blue squares with a orange arrow between them), to convert from Nurbs to polies. I've been using this to create 2d circles and stuff. hth!
