Default 3DS Max 4: Splinecage Help

Hey there!

So...I'm continuing work on my TOS Enterprise (had to totally re-do the primary hull, grid lines, windows, etc. because I wasn't at all happy with it). I'm now trying to model the piece which is on the upper rear of the primary hull. This is the part which, on the studio model, covers the bolts that held the primary hull to the dorsal neck and runs about half way from the rear of the 2/3 deck superstructure back to the impulse engines.

My thinking leads me to the decision that doing a spline cage of this will yield the results I want. However, Max's online help isn't sinking in for some reason and, after several hours of futile attempts, I just can't get things to turn out.

Would someone please suggest a good source for splinecage modeling tutorials? Any helpful suggestions would also be appreciated.
