Great SFX - easy to create with Lightwave
I like to create SFX with the procedural-layers in Lightwave 9.2. The last weeks I´ve tested to create different objects with it - and I found out that many nice things are possible by using it.
So it´s time to create a new Threat for this issue. Hope some others who have the same passion would share there experience with me - or just post ( or get ) new ideas here...
So - this evening I stumbled over a nice tutorial on foundation3d, called "Great balls of fire" and I´ve thought: "Okay, looks easy - use it or loose it"
And after creating a simple scene with only two spotlights and one camera I was surprised about the stunning effects by using only two layers for both volumetric lightsources.
I´m looking forward to create some fantastic effects and render-scenes by modifying this little scene by adding some different layers...
Look at the first render-tests and enjoy...

The first 9 looked pretty good
That last one, however... I dunno... colors seem to be a bit off

Oops... The last was a mistake... For the colours: just the first test - I´ll modify it for fire-effect-scenes ( also some green, blue and dark red scenes ) and the layers too for some other effects - not only fire...
But now here it´s 23:43 and tomorrow the alarm-clock will kick me in my six at 5:45 - so for today it´s over and I´m going to bed...
VERY IMPORTANT: Thanks for all Tipps - This, and every in the future

Well, of the nine up there, I'm not that crazy about the last one. It seems to lack a bit on the coolness scale compared to the first eight.

The last one #9 was from "inside" the two lightsources ( all others from outside ) with a different angle - perhaps for B5-Hyperspace Effects with darker red colours and other layers

Re: Great SFX - easy to create with Lightwave
A few updates on this afternoon - I´ve tried to add a third layer ( the "hotfire"-pics ) for looking what´s happen but the "smoky2" layer that I´ve used is not the final answer...
And for today I´m too busy to create more than the following stuff - unfortunately not enough sleep last week...
Sunday afternoon seems to be the right point to continue...

Dude, that 2nd one on the latest set is the best by far, IMO. That's friggin' wicked looking. I also like the blue one.

Re: Great SFX - easy to create with Lightwave
Are you going to be doing any tutorials for your experiments?
These are very very cool... I haven't upgraded up from 8.5, but after seeing these, I just might make the jump.
Thank you for sharing.

Re: Great SFX - easy to create with Lightwave
ulimann644, Very cool pics
Would you mind if I used #1 & #2 in post 10 in a couple of addons I am making for the space sim Celestia?
You can check out this site - http://www.celestiamotherlode.net/index.html it's where all the addons get placed. Just look under Fictional-Star Trek for some of my addons, listed by fungun. The second one would make a great Badlands, from Star Trek Voyager and the first one would make a great Briar Patch nebula.
All addons require a readme file listing all credits for art work and models used.
Thanks
Tim

No problem, Tim. ( When I´ve finished my actual project - The "ISS Scharnkorst" - I would work more on volume-light-effects and than - I hope - comes the real good stuff... )

For the moment my focus is to finish my starship - but after then, when I work seriously on volume-light-effects again: certainly

The smaller button next to the "Quote" button (the little one with the quotation marks and a plus-sign on it) is for multi-quoting in a single message, so you don't have to post 3 times in a row like that. (just food for thought)

P.S. Please let me know if you need some of this pics with smaller credits - or completely without - and I´ll sent it to you via e-mail, just tell me which you want. ( In this case please don´t forget the credits... )

Thanks ( I´ve used it a few weeks ago... )
By the posts to moebius I was in the firm and had opened multiple windows - and between working and surfin in the net I was a little bit confused and unfortunately post the unfinished message too
As I noted this I´ve tried to delete the first one but I didn´t found the button for it...

Seasons in the Sun...
Ah - back in Austria ( please don´t mix it with Australia - that´s the land with these jumping animals far, far away... )
As I was on my way back from Germany to Austria I thought about a post of e_g_180 were he wrote about the SUN #3 for closer views. I also remembered the nice intro of "star trek voyager" in that moment and suddenly I´ve had an idea: Why not a closer view with some sunflares ??
Based on my earlier tests with volumetric lights and some little modifications by the layers I start to create a flare-effect on this very early morning - and I was positive surprised about the results...
The pic #4 with the red sun and the venator-destroyers is only an outlook what will happen in the final scene - a test for the colours and the effects.
BTW A little bit funny is, that it was not my intention to create any sun at the first...

Re: Seasons in the Sun...
It's great to see you back at it with the awesome effects. I love those sun images, especially the ones with the shuttle and the Venators in them. IMO, your image with the shuttle looks better than the Voyager beginning credits (which was pretty state-of-the-art for 1994/95.)

Good lord, I hope nobody made that mistake. Australia has a whole other syllable in its name. Plus, there's quite a bit of real estate (including a couple oceans) between Europe and Australia.

Thanks that you think so ( it´s great ) - IMO, it looks not better but I´m satisfied with it

It was not meant as a joke - some people read this word quick or hear it with one ear when I say that I´m living in Austria ( not so often here in Austria, but when I´m in other countries and english is the common language ) and think: "Ah - a man from down under..."
I´ve had this situation four times since I live in Austria...

Re: Great SFX - easy to create with Lightwave
Today I´ve start to create the SG-1/SGA Hyperdrive-Effect ( this first one is not 100% authentic - but it will be soon )
By working on it I asked myself if it would be possible to create also the B5-Hypervortex this way. I think I´ll try to find it out the next weeks...
