Default Huge computer trouble...

Here's the deal. My ATX computer just died. It's a 1ghz machine with 256megs of ram and a elsa gladic video card. I also carry two hd's one 10gig and one 20gig, a cdrw and a cdrom, and a simple soundblaster sound card. There's some other cards but nothing to worry about.

Today my little bro was playing diabloII when it died. He said he loaded up the game, took several steps and then the pc shut down. It made two long beeps before it died. I came home and tried to start it up but I got nothing. I can't get an image on the monitor or get any beep codes out of the machine.

I've already replaced the ram, changed the video card, and checked all my connections. Any other ideas as to what might be wrong with it?

You said it made two long beeps before. I'm not sure, but I think that might be a motherboard problem...

So far everyone has told me it's motherboard trouble. I'm hoping that's exactly what it is. I've replaced the cmos battery already. The board is less than three weeks old, same with the chip. I'm going to call the place I bought it from later today...hope they can help.

Probably a powere spike blew out the board, if anything. Do you have a surge protector?

Yeah, of course, an expensive one. I had several computers on at the time and my new one was the only one that died so I doubt it was a powerspike unless the surge protector caused it.

I called the place. About ten days before I bought the board they lowered their guarantee from 30 days to 15. I've had this board for 18. Sucks to be me huh?

Run your computer without the cover on, when you turn it one make sure all the fans are working (spinning) check in the bios to see the temp of your CPU (I take it it's an AMD) the temp should be around 40c - 50c full load) if it's fine, then it could well be a problem with the cooling on your video card, try sticking in 2 80mm fans on your case, one sucking air in, and the other blowing air out!

What slot is your video card in?

It may not be seated right?

Just a thought

I expect it's an AGP! If the card was incorrectly seated the computer would beep loads of times quickly!

Actually it's a P3. I bought a new motherboard and it did the same thing. I reseated the processor as a last resort and now the thing runs better than I've ever seen it run before.

I really don't get why it did what it did. I'll be watching it over the next few days and see what's up. In the meantime I think I'll build my little sis a computer out of my old motherboard, I'm betting it's still good.
