Carrara can probably handle Lightwave 5.6 files, but not 6.0 and above. Total change in the LWO format due to 6.0 and above now having UV mapping.

------------

Welcome to all new arrivals. We love enthusiasm here, and I see a bit in these posts. Look forward to seeing your art grace the forums AND gallery

Actually, I have Lw 7, 9.3 and 9.6 and both Carrara 7 and Carrara 8 can import LWO files without an issue. The worst problem that happens every now and then is reversed polys.

What it won't do it is import a LWS file.

I work with Lightwave as part of my workflow with Carrara 8 on a daily basis.

Yep, sure does! LOL!
Comes in handy for opening a lot of Trek models.
Although, when I do open COB files, quite often then import with their alpha set to 50% and I have to fix that for each surface.

Carrara opens something like 40+ formats.
Plus it integrates nicely with both After Effects and SynthEyes.

I use Deep Exploration 5 sumtin' or other for my conversions. Formats include Max (up to v9) although you have to have Max for that, and my version is 8ish, so that version and lower I can convert.

Deep Exploration is pretty awesome. I have DE Cad Edition v.5.5 and when I encounter a mesh that Carrara acts like a pig with, I run it through DE.

I have a few versions of Max (8, 2008 and 2009) and I think I need to reInstall DE because for some reason when I go to import/export to MAX, DE chokes and throws an error at me. But when that happens, I just use Carrara as my workaround.

Have you ever tried Polytrans? When we started to do the conversions for Foundation3D, we decided upon that one for it's incredible FBX exporter.

I use DE at times for Max and Maya direct conversions though.

I use to use PolyTrans. I found Deep Exploration to be much better. No idea what the current PolyTrans is like though.

It's been a long time, but I think PoserRay converts LWO to a messy OBJ and Carrara reconverts that to a beautiful OBJ. That makes it a big, but very useful 3d model file.

Hello and thank you. I mostly try to get everything into Daz Studio as I don't model and that is an easy program to render with. I'm more of a Photoshop person. Sci-fi and cars are pretty much all I look for in models.

LOL....earlier question. I use Lightwave 9.6 for the most part. I have used C4D in the past but still don't really like the interface. I just purchased 3DS so learning this interface should prove to be fun.

My primary interests are Star Trek and BSG.

My other hobbies are After Effects and Photoshop. Again I am still WAY behind in the learning curve but I do like a challenge. Once I get the hang of the programming I will start my own modeling projects. Creating custom animations with effects are what I do mostly.

This is my first post.

I render mostly in DAZ, but I am preparing to learn Poser as well. I do just about all of my post rendering work in Photoshop.

I love taking pictures. I own a Nikon D70 and D90. Mostly shoot sports pictures and love doing photo manipulations with my pictures.

I like working on different types of renders from Star Wars & Super Heroes to difefrent types of OCs.

Hello... my name is genefleeman and I really would like to be able to accerss the galleries.. I have over 500 pictures, mostly done in Poser and some sceneries done in Artmatic Voyager (a fractal based scenery program that uses fractals to make height maps and textures to make Mountains, water, atmospheres rock and all of the basic components of a scene of nature) . I want to contribute my artwork to the galleries here.... I am hoping to open up a new venue for my artwork, namely here.... I guess I have to make 5 comments in the forums as it is the only thing in the list of things that would keep me from viewing the galleries here as I AM logged in with my name and password and it does SAY I am logged in as genefleeman... thank you for your time and hope to make this one of the homes for my pictures... gene

Hello everyone, My name Is Bob Garcia.

Im currently just starting to learn 3D animation, and after a google search on the subject, I landed myself here. Hoping to become as good as I can using the program Poser.

Over the last year I've been working on a fan edit of Star Wars Episode 3. Adding elements from the original trilogy hoping to make the Prequels tie into the Original Trilogy more. This is really just a hobby of mine.

I was hoping to try my hand at 3D animation and attempt to add those 3D images to my fan edit. So I'm here to learn as much as I can.

I will be brousing across the forums over the next few days like a sponge I'm pretty sure, because once something sparks my interest I quickly become obsessed with learning as much about that subject as I can. I first wanted to make sure to properly introduce myself.

If anyone is interested in my side project I have youtube page dedicated to it, and also a forum post at Originaltrilogy.com I'll try to post a like to a youtube of the opening of the film. If thats not allowed tho, I will quickly take it down.

Thanks for your time.
