Re: Star Trek: Retribution
It was indeed, the track is "Hot and Heavy," track 17, from the expanded release that just came out. It's my favorite piece of music from the entire film--before the soundtrack was released, I'd watch that part of the movie over and over again just to hear it.

Re: Star Trek: Retribution
Alright guys, a quick outline for what's coming up:
Scene 47 was what we just saw aboard Voyager. Scene 48 will (obviously) take place on the Fitzgerald, and will consist of three parts:
A - "The Bridge"
B - "Garr and Ronston"
C - "Garr and Prentice"
After that:
Scene 49: "Space Battle"*
Scene 50: "The Shuttle / A Foolhardy Maneuver"
Scene 51: "The Iron Vulture"
Scene 52: "Not Defeated Yet / The Black Hole"
Scene 53: "The Past Restored"
Scene 54: "Epilogue"
I make no promises about Scene 49...it's going to be the single most elaborate scene I've ever made, I know that much, and to prepare for it I'm studying some of the more famous DS9 battle sequences. I'm going to say up front that I expect a lot of Scene 49 will be based on those battles, and I'm not entirely confident in my ability to completely sell the sequences in terms of things like shields and torpedoes, but I'm going to try. I will hasten to add that Scene 50 should provide more in terms of fresh material.
(And yes, since I know everyone's thinking it, count on some nice cameos from other franchises--they will be brief and you will have to look for them, but they will be there.)
While I'm working on Scene 48, the question I have is which Federation ship designs--canon or fanon--are your favorites? Which ones do you want to see more of, and which ones should I relegate to the status of "background ship"?
(@evil_genius_180: if it's alright, I'd like to feature your USS Allura in some nice closeup and detail shots during this sequence? It, the Sentinel class, and of course Mark Kingsnorth's Ascension will probably be the "big three" in this battle, much as the Galaxy, the Excelsior, and the Miranda were at Chin'toka)

Re: Star Trek: Retribution
So, you're almost done, eh? Sweet. I've kind of decided to just wait for the finished product, so it's nice to know that it's not far off. I take it this one won't be 3 hours long, like the first one was?

It's getting there, it's up to 2:31:42 now, and I'm not sure how much screen time I'll need to flesh out the last couple of pieces. We'll see though.

Still no sound effects or energy VFX, but gives you a better idea what I'm cooking up.

Re: Star Trek: Retribution
I recognize that you are doing an homage to the DS9 fleet sequences, and I am also keeping in mind that this is a test sequence. I have one question, shields...where are the shields on the ships? Are you going to add them in later? Ok, that was two questions.
I loved the shot with the two Galaxy class ships swooping in and unleashing their phasers. That was one of my favorite parts about DS9 actually. Any scene that had a Galaxy kicking butt went to the top of my list.

Re: Star Trek: Retribution
That's one of the best fan-made battle sequences I've ever seen. Though, the question of shields is a valid one. (maybe they're not going to be installed until Tuesday )

Re: Star Trek: Retribution
As far as the question about shields, it came up on YouTube as well. My answer is that if you look at "All Good Things" from TNG, "Sacrifice of Angels"/"Favor the Bold" or "Tears of the Prophets" from DS9, we never saw visible shields on the ships then either. Curiously, in "Tears," we did see the regenerative forcefields around the weapons platforms...but I figure, with that much precedent, no reason I should show them in these battle sequences either.

Re: Star Trek: Retribution
Work on the battle sequence is proceeding nicely...these are going to be some of the most elaborate shots I've ever attempted, but the results are going to be WELL worth the wait.

Re: Star Trek: Retribution
Looking really good. There are a couple things to note, though.
1. The Constellation-class that does a flyby that starts at 20 seconds into the video looks like it flies through a Miranda-class ship.
2. What's up with the camera flying towards those two ships at the end? That's a bit odd, IMO.

Re: Star Trek: Retribution
@evil_genius: I did see that, I just haven't had a chance to go back and fix it yet. That one shot has taken the longest to render of all the ones I've done, so I wanted to get the rest of this sequence in order before I went back to fix it. Good eye, though, very few people have caught that!
As for the last two shots, think back to "Way of the Warrior" (DS9 4x01), when the station first let loose with its new weapons systems. Two shots were first-person perspective shots of torpedoes flying towards two Klingon ships (the first a Vor'Cha, the second a D-7). That's what's planned for those two shots--I finally got started working on the additional visual effects for those shots last night, the explosions are rendering now. The energy weapons and torpedoes will take longer, but they'll be worth the wait.

The more or less finished product is up: http://youtu.be/DvDEBXghGY0
Still some minor fixes, not the least of which is the Constellation/Miranda glitch, but overall it's just about what I envisioned.

Re: Star Trek: Retribution
The volume on many of the explosions seems to be a little high, resulting in clipping. It's most notable when the first Galaxy opens fire on the Warbird at around 30 seconds, and is particularly obvious at 33s and 35s. It's not just limited to that explosion, though - it seems to be present in most of the explosions. (Or is just present in it my setup?)
Other than that, your levels are pretty good. The music is not too loud, the weapons fire doesn't make my ears bleed.
I'm a little puzzled about the shot starting around 27 seconds. We start with a very large ship dominating the shot, and two Galaxys move in to attack the Warbird at the bottom of the shot. Then another ship that looks like a Galaxy flies behind the foremost pair, passing what appears to be a Constitution variant of a comparable size. What's up with that? Is there something I've missed?
Don't take any of this as overly critical, I'm expecting that you'll want everything to be as top-notch as you can make it. I know that I often see things as I intended them to be, rather than how they've ended up.

Re: Star Trek: Retribution
@darth victor: I'm not seeing any clipping glitches in the explosions you mention, I think what you're seeing is actually shadows on the Warbird being cast by the Galaxy-class ships.
As for the two ships you mentioned, perspective can be a tricky thing, and it can be tough to determine size with non-canon classes. The ship that looks like a Galaxy definitely is, while the other ship is a Brisbane-class ship, which is about half the size of the Galaxy but which is much closer to the camera.
EDIT: also, the large ship in that one shot is Mark Kingsnorth's Ascension-class, his original designs called for a 1400-meter ship, but I upscaled it past that for most of these shots.
