Re: New Member Welcome Thread
Hi, my name is Sean. I have visited this site off and on over the course of several years now, in its various conceptions. I use Studio Max 2011 currently, and have been modeling and/or rendering for a few years now. I don't do as much now as I use to because the Army keeps me too damned busy anymore.

Re: New Member Welcome Thread
Hi all,
The name is Scatha and have recently started to get my feet wet in modelling, after having been an admin at artraiders.com for quite some time. My main app for the time being is Hexagon, as I currently am unable to afford anything else.

Welcome to the site.
Many of us understand not being able to afford anything else. I use freeware and open source software also as much as I can for the same reason. I've never tried Hexagon, though.

Re: New Member Welcome Thread
Thanks Taranis,
I can post a link to my deviantart gallery, but that would not all be sci-fi related though. Let me see of this works: ...
My only model I have released so far is a collaboration, which you can see or get here:

Re: New Member Welcome Thread
Hi there. I'm Vic (obviously), I've been a member for about seven months, but I've been lurking for much of that time.
It's about time I introduce myself, so just briefly, I'm a Computer Science graduate who started out with an interest in computer graphics, and then I had an assignment modelling with Blender. I had fun doing that, and then built up a model of the ship from Blake's 7.
That was 5 years ago. Last year, I did a course on Maya and Z-Brush. Didn't have much luck with Z-Brush, but quite enjoyed Maya - except for its wonderful little bugs. My project for that was a recreation of a Ziggurat, a massive ancient Mesopotamian religious monument. I was working part-time for a small regional TV station at the time. I'm still working there, full time for the moment. It's not as glamorous as it sounds!
Anyway, this year, I discovered Sculptris. After a few weeks playing with that, particularly sculpting a nose, I decided to try sculpting a human head. The model I chose is an actor from a TV show, but I won't name him or the show. While it's not finished (I haven't sculpted any hair), I think I've attached a picture. I'm hoping that someone reading this can identify him, because if you can, I've done at least a fairly good job. The only thing I'll give away is that he has blue eyes.
Assuming my upload worked, anybody recognise him?

Thanks!
Not McCoy, this TV show was from the early 80s, but he's also been in a few more recent shows.

Re: New Member Welcome Thread
I will give it some thought ........no time now .....
But I suggest that you start a thread in the "On The Horizon" section with the image.
just so that this thread is not tied up.
your work will get lost in this thread

Re: New Member Welcome Thread
Hi,
I found this forum quite by accident when searching for Star Wars themed poser models. I go by the tag "Jabba" in my artwork. I've only recently started to consider doing sci-fi art instead of pin-ups all the time. Don't get me wrong, I love my pin-ups... maybe this will develop into sci-fi pin-ups - the ultimate in having my cake and eating it
I operate on a tight budget, so can't get too extravagant with the software I use... my main weapons of choice are DAZ Studio for main render with postwork done in Photoshop (I will occasionally paint from scratch in Photoshop, but vast majority start in DAZ first).
I've never done any mesh modelling, but I know a friend who has ZBrush, so who knows what the future might bring!

Re: New Member Welcome Thread
Welcome to the forums. Whether you found it by accident, were directed here or whatever, we're just glad you found it.
Sci-Fi pin-ups, eh? Those are cool. John Eaves does some cool Star Trek ones that he posts on his blog.
As for being on a budget, join the club. Most of us are. I use a much free and open source software as I can. BTW, if you like what ZBrush can do, check out Sculptris: http://www.pixologic.com/sculptris/ All you have to do is fill out a simple (free) registration form to download the software. I've been told that it's similar to ZBrush, though I've never used ZBrush, so I don't know for certain.

Re: New Member Welcome Thread
I hear you on that one. I use Wings3D for exactly one thing: the mirror modeler. I never do anything else with the program. I export meshes from trueSpace in .obj format, mirror them in Wings and save them as a .obj again and then import them back into trueSpace. That's my whole purpose for keeping Wings3D installed.
Welcome to the forums.

Re: New Member Welcome Thread
Heya everyone. Names Neo, and I am both a sci-fi addict, and a modeler and animator in a way. Well, more of an animator, though I am trying my hands out with modeling. Not only that, but I am a game designer in training, wanting to make my own games and such. Glad to be here and all.

Welcome aboard.
Hope to see what you model in the future as modelling is more my area of interest.
as I am generally slow its all the time I have to give it and rendering is out the window.
what program do you use??

Re: New Member Welcome Thread
For modeling I tend to use Wings 3D as its easier for me than things like Blender. First modeling program I learned to use at college, and I made a few things so far. Well, nothing complete, as its mainly things like heads for characters, and even so I haven't made a decent human yet. Though I am planning on training myself in that field, somehow.

Re: New Member Welcome Thread
Well it should be interesting. I've been planning on making models based on my own ideas for a sci-fi series, but I am getting there. I enjoy coming up with ideas for a sci-fi movie or game, game primarily. Like I said before, I enjoy writing as well, as I've been attempting my hand at a series that is my own, but this one has multiple crossovers. Either way, its fun stuff.
