Re: New Member Welcome Thread
So...I've been doing 3d art for about a year now, but I'm only starting to think about making some 3d models of my own. Hopefully, this is a good place to pick up tips.
At the moment, I have played around with Sketch Up (for some work projects) and then started working with Hexagon. I tried Blender (free is good when that's about the limit of your budget) but found that it wasn't exactly intuitive (at least for me).
I'm hoping to be able to create some classic ships from old SF Films as starters - for example, I'd love to find a model of the old space ark from When Worlds Collide and then try to make one of my own that matches it.
Anyone, this looks like a great forum, so I look forward to learning a lot from all of you.

Welcome aboard.
I like old scifi films myself.
I have not see the Space Ark from when world collide made in CGI, (That does not mean no one has tried) if not, you could be the first to build it.
But its a simple shape so your best bet is to look for all the reference material you can, screen caps, or any on-line modelling source.
I found this after some searching to get you started.

and this even better image

I hear you on that one. In fact, there are a lot of us in that boat. I use as much freeware and open source software as I can.

Re: New Member Welcome Thread
Wow. That Canadian model is just too cool! And the technical drawings look like a great place to start - although I have to say I am rather at a loss as to where to begin. I guess I will just jump right in and see how far I get before I start weeping openly.

Re: New Member Welcome Thread
You can create a new thread on the Space Ark and you could get some help ...
you have to use photobucket or flickr to post images at the moment we have problems with our file management system at the moment.
both are free

Re: New Member Welcome Thread
Hi all, I'm new here and trying to reach the goal of 5 forum posts so I can get into the downloads section. Can anyone tell me where I can find Trek MORPHS/Textures for Poser figures? Thanks, peace, and long life.

Re: New Member Welcome Thread
Thanks for the info and the welcome, Taranis.
Of course, I will be happy to share any work I have which is appropriate. Most of my stuff tends to be of an adult nature, but I should have some family-friendly stuff too. I am also a member at the Galactica sister-site... so I guess any BSG stuff will have to go there.

Re: New Member Welcome Thread
Heya. Latest new guy here.
I won't lie. I'm mostly here for the download section heh, though I do plan to contribute what I can. Though honestly I've been out of the CGI loop for about a year and a half now. Have some blender experience on the old UI, but haven't yet gotten around to mastering the new one. So i'm still in the 'tutorial' phase yet again. :P

Re: New Member Welcome Thread
Thanks. but i'm finding it hard to come up with 5 'constructive' posts to gain access heh. Most of the threads I look at are well over a month old, and even then, having been out of the loop for a year and a half, I don't have much worthwhile to say even then. Plus my only real experience is with blender as well, and most people here seem to use lightwave from what i've been reading. I have some friends who are good with Maya, but.. I don't have nearly that kind of budget. So Blender it is. I just need to get the hang of the new UI and figure out where everything is again.

welcome to 3DG, zipgames
As your new you should be aware of "Double posting" in this case introducing yourself twice.
One common faux pas on Internet forums is to post the same message twice

Re: New Member Welcome Thread
Like many others I am sure, I have been pointed this way from over on the Daz forums,... I enjoy my science fiction and fantasy in all it's forms,.. books, TV, films, comics, fan art and games. I am the 'service desk' for most of my friends and collegues and due to the uptake of a number of these users to Daz/Poser I have found myself pulled into yet another medium. I am starting slowly, working my way up to the 'Build your own Enterprise' tutorial,... but I look forward to the journey.
