That's a great version of the WOTW War Machine! As to the red ray, that's supposed to be the heat ray but it was done by optically matting sparks from a metal grinder onto the ship.

When I tried to do this in Lightwave, I had my best luck with a partical emitter, but I don't know if you have that in Blender.

Yes, Blender does have particle systems, and that's what I used in the current version of the red ray. Along with some motion blur.
