Ships of the U.E.G.
Thought I'd get around to rebuilding some of my original ship designs.
The first ship I decided to start on is the M'Aangan fighter.
The history is kind of rough at the moment.
The M'Aangan race is the first exra-terrestrial life form encountered by the Human race. This encounter took place a few years after the Explorer class ship Christopher Columbuswas thought lost to an explosion. This explosion, instead of destroying the Columbus opened a hole in space and sucked the Columbus into M'Aangan occupied terratory.
After floating nearly dead in space for 18 months a M'Aangan freighter found the ship and towed it back to the nearest inhabited world. Over several months the crew of the Columbus, still kept alive by their failing cryotubes are revived and their ship repared with the addition of Earths first FTL drive. This drive will become known as a jump engine.
The first use of this Jump engine will return the Columbus and her crew to Earth escorted by two Ships of the Royal M'Aangan Navy. Shortly after these incidents the United Earth Government is formed and the M'Aangan become it's greatest ally.
The M'Aangan are a humanoid race. The males are an average height of 8 feet and the females are an average height of 7 feet. Both sexes have deep blue eyes and long black hair, the males keep there hair tied back. They are considered beautiful by many but this could be caused by a pheromone that adjusts to whatever race might be near. They have a very limited control over this pheromone and it is not sex specific. Meaning a male pheromone
can effect either male or female of another race. One of the few known races that this has no effect on is the Sckrow, a small reptilian race. Because of this the Sckrow hate the M'Aangan.
Normaly a very open race who freely gives it technology to other races. The one thing unknown about their technology is their fighter craft. Pilots for these fighters have never been seen. This leads many to believe that the ships are piloted by remote or have a biolagical brain that is grown within the ship. These fighters have no FTL drive but when needed several of these fighters can be attached to an external FTL drive. This device is called the death blossom. These ships normaly work in groups of five or more.
The weapon systems of thses ships can be slaved together to hit a single target. One ship will move forward of the rest and paint a target. All other ships will lock to this target automaticly. This can effectivly keep the other ships at a safe enough distance while fireing. This can also be used for recon by sending the intelligence to the support craft.
The first four pics are of the original ship.

I remember this from way back. Liked it then and it's always cool to see updated versions of great designs.

Re: Ships of the U.E.G.
UPDATE...
I don't know how much will be actually updated or changed. I just think over the last few years I've learned a few more things and can do a better job on the ship. Even with textures I think with waht I know know that will be the biggest improvement.
I wanted to add more to the engine than I had before.
the third pic is just an engine effects test.

Nice start.
I really like that engine test. Did you use volumetric light to achieve that?

UPDATE...
I know this isn't exactly a ship but I decided to do a water based station/city. Most of it will be below the surface.

Re: Ships of the U.E.G.
This is just a little test to see how the cities would look. Also a little loook at the new earth map I'm working on.

Re: Ships of the U.E.G.
UPDATE...
I'm back at the cargo ship I made for the contest.
I've begun to work on the interior of the walkway. So far it's still kind of rough and I also need to add handles to the doors.

Re: Ships of the U.E.G.
Gotta love Jack. Wish they made a second one.
I just watched Evil Dead two the other night.
UPDATE...
I did some more work on the door and added a handle. I still need to come up with a way for the walkway parts to attach together. I also need to come up with fuel lines and other things to connect through these walk ways.
I've also blocked in more of the inside of the walkway. I'll have to add a few access ports so the crew can get into the cargo container. I'll also have to add a few removable panels to gain access to emergency supplies like food and cold suits. From time to time the connections between the walkways can fail. And sometimes it has happened with crew either in the walkway or the container.

Re: Ships of the U.E.G.
Yep, it has a nice cool look to it.
I like the bulkheads (or whatever they're called) in the hallway.
Regarding Jack Burton... Did you know that 'Big Trouble in Little China' was actually supposed to be the sequel to 'Buckaroo Banzi'?
And yeah, I would have really liked to see a sequel to BTiLC.
It's one of my all time favorite movies.

Re: Ships of the U.E.G.
You probably got that info from IMDB. Fortunately it's not true. It just happens that W.D. Richter was involved in both movies. As great as both movies are they are nothing alike. Big Trouble was originally written as a western and instead of Jack's truck being stolen his horse is. Carpenter and Russell mention this on the DVD commentary. Carpenters DVD commentaries are some of my favorites. This one and the one they did for the Thing are some of the funniest.
Enough of that, now for an update.
UPDATE...
I finished the build of the door including the hinge.

Re: Ships of the U.E.G.
Unfortunately for me I didn't get that info from IMDB.
But then again, Carpenter is a smarta** and likes a good joke.
The new images look great. I like the middle door and the grating in the hallway adds are nice touch.

Re: Ships of the U.E.G.
yah man!
You know (of course ya do!) it's those little touches that make such a big difference.
Like how the 'handle' area is darker because of all of hands grabbing that area.
Looks really good - I can't wait to see the whole thing all done up.

Re: Ships of the U.E.G.
UPDATE...
A bit more work done on the door textures. I've included a close up of the sign.
Now that I have a good idea that I can get the look that I wanted I'll probably start again from scratch.

This ship must be crewed by some messy people.

Re: Ships of the U.E.G.
These parts usually stay with the cargo containers until picked up by another cargo ship. So they might be sitting on a planet surface or in some station for a monthe or years. So the blame can't be placed on the ships' crew only.

Ah, gotcha. That explains a lot. I know cargo ships are often shown being a little rough around the edges (Serenity, the Millennium Falcon, etc.) they're usually not that dirty. But your explanation allows for it to be so. Great work on the textures, BTW. That looks pretty damn real to me.

Re: Ships of the U.E.G.
Well then I guess I missed the boat on this one.
I looked at it and it reminded me of things like auto repair stations where the mechanics touch things often and they discolor the surface around an object - like a light switch, a door knob, a drawer.
Either way it still looks way cool.

Re: Ships of the U.E.G.
UPDATE...
I wasn't all that happy with the door textures as they where so I decided to redo them in a more clean version. This would how the door might look on a ship owned by a collector. Like a Jay Leno of spaceships.
I'll do dirtier versions later.
