Sci-Fi verses Horror
Okay...somebody clue me in, where's the fine line between Sci-Fi movies & Horror movies. With all the special effects in the newer movies I think the 2 genres have crossed over into each other. How does one catagorize something like Jason X?

It's Hor-Fi. Seriously, I dunno. I always thought the line was a little fuzzy myself. People have been having that problem with Godzilla movies for years. In some stores, they're in sci-fi, in others they're in horror. I guess the only stores that have it right are the ones that put sci-fi and horror in the same group.

Well, I love Sci-Fi :cylon: & Horror :colwar: , but it just seems like the lins were always crossed over. I love the Evil Dead movies & just seeing them on the Sci-Fi channel sometime back got me to wondering exactly where the line was. Then ya got movies like the Ghost of Mars... ...Sci-Fi? Horror? Now where did that go again?
I agree with ya that the only ones right are the guys filing them in both categories!
Thanks for answering.

The movie that probably first crossed the line between sci-fi and horror is a known classic and came out the same year I was born (a couple of noteworthy things that year ) I'm, of course, referring to that classic Ridley Scott film, Alien. Now, that was definitely a fine blend of horror sci-fi and it really opened up this new genre. (I've got the whole Alien collection on DVD.)

i back up that, i really think the peak of horror-fi was the alien series, that one was really an amalgamation of the genres, especially aliens 2

Alien was awesome! But look at Frankenstein. That's considered a horror film, yet it has many sci fi elements in it.

I think the Frankenstein comment really hits the mark. I never though of that before but it's pretty accurate IMO.
Perhaps the reason why SciFi and horror work so well together is because when you use technology to resurrect the dead, create a monster, or order a pizza you run some serious risks and put yourself in grave danger.
For me, the best scifi and horror stories have always had elements of each.
Alien is, after all - a ghost story. The house is the Nostromo, Ripley is the woman trapped in the house and the alien is the ghost. It's a classic horror story with one extra element thrown in - There is no way she can just run out of the house and leave the ghost standing behind a window watching her leave. Brilliant stuff really.

Re: Sci-Fi verses Horror
Hi!
We have Hellraiser series too. It don´t have high-tech, but an ancient tecnology was able to open a gate to the hell. In a similar point, a really good Horror/Scifi movie, and probably one of my favorites is Event Horizon, a complete horror film, and a complete scifi film as well .
Another really good one was Dark City.
I´m not very focused on scifi, I´m more a horror/fantasy fan, but Battlestar Galactica changed my point of view
Cheers!

Re: Sci-Fi verses Horror
I tend to lean more towards the SciFi genera then horror. Films like Planet of the Apes, 2001, Mission to Mars... although I did like Event Horizon and the first three Alien movies...

Re: Sci-Fi verses Horror
I´ve done some work relating fantasy and horror, but some bits of scifi as well.
I have in my plans a scifi set for 1st quarter of 2008, some kind of space marine, I´ll go showing some pics as soon as I finish some stuff I have now in progress
I have some stuff I could show you, but I can´t find an option to upload images :S I´m currently working for a company called DAZ3D. I´ve done quite a bit of scifi here, but more retro-scifi that any other (and all older projects, I did a style change and quality increase a while ago, and still don´t touched scifi... by now :P)
Cheers!

On a new train of thought ...
I had a look at the website for DAZ3D .. looks impressive ..
problem with Lightwave is that not many people model characters .....and those are the type of images I liked doing when I render images at all ..
very interested in what you do so I am looking forward too your images

Re: Sci-Fi verses Horror
I got your sci-fi and horror right here...in a little video I did a few years ago. I am expanding on it now, that is what the dusty ship landing anim was for.

Re: Sci-Fi verses Horror
I think, as most people have found, the line is blurred. I mean, even the ceti eel coming out of Chekov's ear in "The Wrath of Khan" has a pretty high squirm factor.
