2014 Asteroid Field
So the other day Evil Genius posted a a link on his blog about a Asteroid Tutorial on his web site. Which is convenient as I said on his blog since I have a image I was working and The old asteroid field I had using an old tutorial wasn't so spectacular. I like the new tutorial which I found an almost exact duplicate of.

Anyway. I made an asteroid and asteroid field to test it so here you go.

Re: 2014 Asteroid Field
Thank you both.
Just did one the tutorials. Threw in my stars. Added my curved nebula model. Replaced the nebula image with a brown gradient with noise image I made in photoshop. Depth of field in Image Processing in LW. Probably two to three hours for the whole thing. All rendered in LW no post.
Will spend more time for what I have in mind.

Re: 2014 Asteroid Field
I haven't even finished the tutorial. I keep playing games instead of working on that in my spare time.

Re: 2014 Asteroid Field
I got some time to work on this again. This isn't the final product. I want to make my own "Starfighter" and a cleaved in half asteroid. But haven't really had the time. I'm sure the Starfury firing isn't right. They were more bolts and a different color. One way they did them was putting a string of like 5 lens flares close together. there was another way but I think it was Dave Jarrod that came up with the lens flare short cut.
Anyway WIP more of a test.

Re: 2014 Asteroid Field
k bugging me how clear it is. Haven't got motion blur right in lightwave with so i faked it a little in photoshop.

Re: 2014 Asteroid Field
It looks more like the lens is out of focus. That or everything is moving fast, including the asteroids.
Minor suggestion: if you want it to appear that just the ship is moving very fast, you could render the ship as a separate layer and motion blur only that.
I like the "clean" version a lot. The lighting is great, it has a great sense of action and that explosion looks fantastic.

Re: 2014 Asteroid Field
Thank you. I was having motion blur issues trying to do it lightwave. Was buggin' the crap out of me. Yeah ended up looking like bloom on everything. Oh well.
I was doing it seperate before. Will figure out what was going wrong in LW. The motion blur attempt was an after thought .
Thank you I'm happy with the lighting. I've added a little spec to the asteroids. I like it. I think I'll tone it down a little.
Really need to build a ship.

Re: 2014 Asteroid Field
Yeah, motion blur is a tricky thing. I generally try to avoid it myself. The only time I really use it is to fake volumetric lighting.

Re: 2014 Asteroid Field
Never done volumetric light with motion blur.
This was with polys extruded from the model shape to fake volumetric. Its how they did the Voyager shot in the Pre volumetric days.
That's the Sarod model I think? Should check that.

Re: 2014 Asteroid Field
Cool. That was one of my favorite games when I was a kid. I used to do similar drawings in Windows Paint before I started doing 3D CGI.

Re: 2014 Asteroid Field
Loved Asteroids. Played it all the time. Got it on the Atari 2600 when they released it. And later on X-Box.
Did this in like a hour in Lightwave. Most of it spent trying to find were they've hidden points2polys in LW now.

Re: 2014 Asteroid Field
It's still a fun arcade game. I grew up playing the Atari 7800 version. The newest version of Asteroids I have is for the Playstation. It's all 3D and pretty looking, but you can unlock the classic 1979 version. Of course, there are free versions you can get for the computer.

Re: 2014 Asteroid Field
I had a version on my phone for a while.
Was just thinking the other day that a Asteroids game in full thee dimensional space would be cool. With a B5 or Last Starfighter type maneuverable ship would be awesome. Sure there's a good one like that. I don't know if Asteroids 3D is like that.

Re: 2014 Asteroid Field
I've played Space Rocks 3D, which was something along those lines. I prefer good old fashioned Asteroids.

Re: 2014 Asteroid Field
I mostly followed this tutorial for creating an asteroid ring.
https://youtu.be/2AIX-N_wCAc
I created a short video in Lightwave 2015.3 using most of the techniques shown.
https://youtu.be/DR6-Rc2ToD4
I thought it turned out pretty nice.
