Open Lightwave-Projects
Hi - I´m Ulrich "ulimann644" Kuehn
Surprised about the multiple feedback in the forum I decide to open a new thread, to let all of you, that interested in Render-Graphics- and Animations, know on which projects I´m actually working. :colwar:
Hope to get a lot of feedback from all of you and start some interesting discussions...

Re: Open Lightwave-Projects
Okay - One of my primary projects is to create the sun and the planets of our solar-system ( inclusive the "dwarf-planet" pluto )
I hope to finish the work on it the next few weeks. Enclosed there are a few render-thumbnails of some test-scenes
All textures by NASA - All meshes by me

Re: Open Lightwave-Projects
One of two render-scenes I´m actually work on is "The Battle over Endor"
This is only a first test-image, just to see how the laserbeams work. I´ve to fix the illumination, change the planet, and... and... and...
It´s for all who love "Return of the Jedi"...

Re: Open Lightwave-Projects
The second scene I actually work on is another Star-Wars scene from Episode V. It´s the imperial Task-Force that arrives over Hoth ready to attack the rebel-base.
I dither to turn the whole scene about 180 degrees and use a 3D-planet and some 3D-Moons for the Hoth-System...
Enclosed is a thumbnail of the first render-test...

Re: Open Lightwave-Projects
That ISD image is da bomb. I love Greg Martin's space scenes, the models are stunners and you did a great job at putting it all together into a sweet composition. I'm not touching the Death Star one right now because most of my crits are in the laser beams, which you say you're working on. The planets look mostly good but the Earth-like one (might even be Earth) looks a little off, but that might be a lighting issue and Mars' atmosphere looks too white to me, it should be more of a salmon color.

I don´t know that, because the Death Star II Mesh Archive - downloaded on F3D - has no credit-readme.file !! So, the only Name I could credit, was the nickname of the Uploader...

Mistakes like that can happen when people use more than one member name on the various sites/forums.

Yuppers. But it's funny when the guy has resources available on ONE site using either name

First of all: Thanks for helping me by constructive critz !!
You are right with the lasers - I´ve rendered it with low post-effects to save rendertime. Thats also the reason why I rendered it much more solid as I want for the final scene. There is really much to do until it´s ready, ( that´s what and... and... and... means )
I´ve also testet long-range laser beams before in a scene, that I don´t want to finish next time. This first try with a star trek action scene is not good but you can see what kind of laser beams I want to have for the final scene. ( see thumb1 )
For the earth in this test-scene I´ve used a mesh with I testet making planets, only by using procedural-layers. - There is a very good tutorial on f3d from "JediKnight" ! ( see thumb2 ) But now I have so many layers for this planets, after I had modified the tutorial " a little bit" and parameters for this layers, that something gone wrong ( or something I forget to modify ) so I will create a complete new mesh for the earth.
I promise you - all planets will looking very good in the end...

Yeah, me neither. I was trying to make a planet earlier and wound up getting pissed off and giving up (for now.) I'd rather make 8 starships than 1 planet.

I was really surprised to read that... I thought, so far, planets are easy stuff for beginners, that´s the reason why I´ve tried to make some, before I create my first starship - I´ve only made some first sketches on paper so far... :cylon:
Today I´ve updated my "procedural-planets". Now the atmosphere and the clouds looks much better...

It depends. I spent years working on starship building and very little time on making planets. I know other 3D modelers that are that way. I can create a planet in trueSpace (which kinda sucks a planet textures to begin with and that doesn't help) that will look all right from certain distances but I like close images of planets for orbital scenes. (which is why I usually cheat and use LunarCell in Gimp. )

Very nice - I like the colours and the coastlines much ( is it a texture or some layers ?? ), but the clouds should be more randomize ( Crescent moons are okay if arabs living there... ) Unfortunately there seems to be no atmosphere - so it would be a very hard life :cylon:

Re: Open Lightwave-Projects
I´ve seen it loooooooooooong time ago ( two and a half decades I think ) - so I really can´t remember this planet ( poor for a commercial film of the 80´s - I´ve seen star-wars in 1978 and the planet-design was outstanding there... )
The only two good things of "The last Starfighter" are the Xur-Spacefighters and the Starfighter-Vessels itself - but thats only my taste...
And... yes - I take the challenge and try to create this planet ( with a visible atmosphere )

Re: Open Lightwave-Projects
Well... The Last Starfighter was the first TRUE CGI movie ever made (more so than Tron), and that planet is pure CGI... before people knew what CGI was
1984... a life time ago.

A good argument but Star Trek II was also made anywhere that time - and the Genesis-Planet ( during and after terraforming ) looks much better for my taste ( also CGI )
