Original universe damaged spaceship
Hello!
I am pretty much a newbie here, haven't shown any of my work before.
I am currently working on an animated short story (scifi, naturally) with spaceships and all that.
I am at the moment finishing up my models, will start animating and rendering soon.
Anyways, here is my spaceship model for you to comment and critique on. Still working on the torn off rear section.
Here is a closeup of the rear. Needs more cabling, some cleanup and some texturing. I'll probably make some more changes as well.
Here is an overview of the damaged ship. Needs more battle damage.
Here is an undamaged ship for comparison.
Let me know what you think, also ideas about additional damage and ship internals are welcome!
Thanks for reading this far!

Nice design and damage. If damaged by weapons fire, perhaps add some scorching.

Very different design, looks near-future. I like it. What's the round open structure on top?

Thanks for the encouragement! Yeah, damage is caused by weapons fire, the scorch marks and more damage is still in progress.
It is indeed sort of an alternate universe / near future ship, no warp drives or energy shields. The round structure is a docking ring. It is a smallish ship, about 3/4 the size of the Space Shuttle.
Thanks for the comments, I'll post an update when I get some more damage done!

Hehe.. Hmm.. Seems that the docking hatch is not quite obvious enough. Any ideas about how to improve it?
This is the image I used as a reference:

It will be perfectly obvious when animated. I think it's fine as it is.

Small update, I was playing with some procedural shaders. Looks sorta OK, but the ship internals are far too clean, I need to dirty them up a lot. Also I want to add much more laser scorch marks etc.
Opinions?

This is a beautiful design! May I suggest that you do an undamaged version as well?

Thanks Elowan! Yeah, the story I am working on calls for both a baddly damaged ship and an almost undamaged ship.

Here is an updated image, I did some more texture work on the rear. I think it is starting to look like an explosion damage.
Next I plan to work on the rest of the hull plating.
Thanks for all your comments, keep them coming!

Beautiful work so far! I especially like the ship's nose... reminds me of the Space Shuttle.

Thanks for all your kind comments! They really motivate me to keep working on this project.
I'm still working on the ship hull, so I thought I'd show you a view from inside the cockpit instead.
There are a couple of things wrong with it still, and also the fish eye camera causes some distortion, but it shows most of the cockpit instrumentation (which is based on the Space Shuttle).

Wow that impressed, is the ship your own design, I like the detailing of the damage you must have put in allot of work, It looks so impressive, your cabin scene is just something else the detailing is so clear, I'm impressed...cheers

Thanks guys!
Yes, the ship is my own design. I've been working on this project for almost a year now.
Actually, I am pretty much a newbie to 3D as well, this is my first ever attempt at doing a 3D animation project. The joystick was my first ever 3D model, followed by the various cockpit parts, pilot, and finally the spaceship itself. This has been a lot of fun so far!
Here is a minor update, I've been trying various laser scorch marks and additional damage, but didn't yet find anything I'd been happy with. I added a dent on the side of the ship and some other minor details, though.

I particularly like the texturing. What app are you using? Max? Rhino? LW?

None of the above, I'm using Cinema 4D R8.1.
Practically all of the textures are procedural, with multiple layers and multiple noise/fractal generators mixed within each of the layers. Render times have increased quite a bit since I started texturing..

I love the detailing on the nose (and the control panels in that cockpit are almost too good). The last shot of the battle damage in the rear is great.
