IMAGE: Alien ship egg stor- 12mil polys!
Hi all,
Here is is 12 million polys!!! Titled "Infestation" , Here is my scene from Alien, the derelict alien ship egg silo, deep in the bowels of the vessel. Kane is is lowered in and gets a face hugger surprise. This is that scene reproduced totally in 3D.
It was done in 2000 with theh same machine as the other recent images I posted, 1GHZ+, 1 GB RAM, cant remembermuch more, probably an Nvidia GPU.
I will post the main wide shot and i have closer detail shots in my archives, if anyone is curious as to the overall polygon and detail of the entire scene. The wall details are extensive. wth a layered material with complex opacity mapping ,dirt and dust layers.
Lots of polys were spent on the eggs and just about everything else. It took my machine at the time (2000) approx.48 hours to render ONE frame with al 12+ million polys.
Tis isnt layerred in planes to reduce poly per render, this was rendered in ONE default scanline frame/pass.
Thanks for viewing,
Rob

Very nice indeed and I think my PC would have choked at trying to even load a 12 million poly scene. Very cool and how did you fill the 48 hours that the machine was rendering and how often did you check to see if it was done?

This, partnered up with Sean Kennedy's Alien Pilot, would be some awesome stuff.
Do you still have this mesh?

Re: IMAGE: Alien ship egg stor- 12mil polys!
Have you tried optimizing it, to make it smaller yet still awesome?

Re: IMAGE: Alien ship egg stor- 12mil polys!
yes, from mky experience working on xbox/ps3 consoles I could radically reduce the poly count.
to TENTAMENT: I lived in this part of pittsburgh, pa called South Side, over 100 bars/pubs. I drank lots, got laid and checked on progress overy so often. It was so big as I was test rendering at the end, I could get one render then had to restart my PC, restart MAX then pray the file doesnt crash on opening. One secret is keep only one view in the workspace of MAX and set geometry to bounding box only , then save the file. If the was a crash it usually corrupted or just ate the file so I saved in mirrored directories.
But it was all worth it.
I could probably optimize it to use in a realtime game, with what I know today, this was made in 2000, just before I moved to CA and work at Angel Studios(rockstar san diego).
I'm gonna dig thru my archives and see if I can find the mesh and other shots taked to show how much detail is in this scene. Give me a few days.
Thanks to all for your comments and viewing my work.,
-Rob
