Hello, I'm and architectural model maker from Seattle who has just dove into the CGI pool as it were.
This is my first Star Trek mesh. I started this project with the intention of using the model to CNC a practical model but it ended up being a full-on educational experience for me. Before I tackled the Enterprise I had a little experience with Rhino at my workplace on a large model of a support pylon for a pedestrian bridge. Even with many layers of clear plexiglass to deal with, that project was much easier than tackling the good old Enterprise.
Here is my Enterprise page to see some progress pictures. You will see, in the center of the page, a photo of the first CNC test I did. The second test turned out much better.

If you browse my homepage you will see that CGI is a relatively small part of my hobbywork. But I think it is a very important part of most of what I do in my morkplace and my home leisure. A perfect example of this is this ship that I designed in Rhino and Autocad. I laser cut the layers for the ribs out of styrene and built by hand from there.
