Default Conversion between newer and older versions tip for Max users

Some of you out there still run Max 3.1 and all of you who want to download Max4 or soon Max5 meshes but can't use them now have hope. Borislav Petrov has made a script that will convert Max4/5 meshes to Max 3.1. I'm not sure it'll work on earlier versions of Max than version 3.1 however this script should prove very useful for some of you.

looks very good. But is it for Max 3 users to import or for Max 5 users to export?

Well, since Max5 and Max4 files are compatible with each other you won't need Max5 to run the script, Max4 will do. As it says on the page it's a Max5 exporter. It will convert as much as possible and skip the parts that will flaw. As I understand it the script will be able to convert any Max 4/5 scene files to an earlier version including 2.5.

I can't test the plugin since I haven't got R2.5 and R3.1 isn't installed (won't bother installing it anymore)

I know there are at least a few on this board who use the older versions so it might come in handy?

So you use the script in Max 3.1 and then Max 4+ and 5 Max files will load into Max 3.1, or the Max 4+ and 5 users need to export to the Max 3.1 format?

(I think that's what Tom was asking)

I'm going to work on a project full time for the next week and I'm going to bed immediately so I can't answer your questions without reading the information through thoroughly so how about you have a go?

I reread it again. It doesn't say specifically. But it talks about exporting. Which means its an add on for Max R5.

It also says "no importer necessary" which means either you don't import with a plugin, or it does the work of importing for you. So its still a little unclear.

But it seems to be an exporter only.

Oh well... I rarely use others meshes anyways.

Gotta chime in here.

Looks like it will import in older max versions, even all the way back to 2.5.

Yeah, but I think that you have to have max 5 to run it.
