I am definitely NOT the biggest Trek fan, to put it lightly.
Still, I love this image.

...and it was Peter Pan, not Kirk, who originally spoke the quote

Whoaaa awesome! GREAT feel in that picture... Very dramatic... Man it's the best image I've ever seen atmosphere-wise! Sort of depicts the vastness of space or something I'm gonna download that baby!

Beautiful!
Absolutely GORGEOUS work!
Any insights on how you created the planet/moon/star? Or was this stock photography? Or ??

@Michael:
All elements in the pic are 3D, except part of the sun flare. The earth consists of 2 spheres with some Nasa earth footage put on it as well as real satellite clouds. The moon is also a sphere with a highres texture on it.
A VERY good source for those kind of textures is
http://visibleearth.nasa.gov/
It's incredible what they offer - and the picture are free to use. That's damn good spening of tax money if you ask me.
The only major enhancement I did in Photoshop is adding some glow and adjusting the sun flare. I often use the SolarCell Plugin from Flaming Pear for those elements. They also have a pretty good planetary generator plugin.
Hope that helps...

1- Earth Texture
2- Clouds with shadows?

Well, two spheres with a rather complicated shader network in Maya. The inner sphere bascially consist of a earth texture with bumpmap, specular map and some fading out towards the horizon (So that you don't see the actual edge of the sphere). The cloud texture is being used to darken the areas where the shadow should be (with a slight offset to the side where the shadow should fall). This gives much better result compared to rendered shadows (you would have to use raytracing in Maya to do that - and that just does take too much time).
The second sphere is using a cloud texture which is also faded out at the end. We also added an atmospheric glow just around the edge. The clouds itself have a small bumpmap as well.
To set up a planet like this can take up to a day, even more if you get it really perfect, and each camera setup usually required some tweaking to get exactly the look you want, but it's worth it.
