Default First Character

As the title says I've finally made the leap to working on my first character. So far I'm happy with result. In the end it won't look too realisticly human but it will be recognizably humanoid. I hope.

Very nice start. And good choice of basic texture for the eyes.

Thanks. And coming from you that means something because I've seen the characters that you've done.

UPDATE....
I kind of went back to the beginning because I didn't like the shape of the head.

Very nice.

A lot of people seem to favour the detail-out method for making character heads... what drew you to it over the alternatives?

It's the only method I understood and the best written tutorial I could find.

UPDATE....
Did a bit more work on it. I also played a little with textures.
Almost normal.

And what I hope will turn out to be M'Aangan.

I would bring the center of the eyebrow ridge down a bit lower. Other than that, it looks excellent.

That's not the only problem. There's a ridge running along the center of the skull. And the cheeks aren't as full as I would like them.

AH SHE STILL LIVES!!!!
UPDATE...
I let this go for too long without working on it.
I've made the nostrils for the nose. SO far the nose is the one part I'm very happy with. I've worked a bit on the eyes that I've noticed are too far apart. And I made the mouth. The lower lip could use a little more definition, it's a little to weak for my taste and the whole face is a bit too manish looking so I'll have to work on that.

Just playing with lighting and textures.

I can definately see that some tweaking will be needed but for my first non spaceship I'm happy with the results so far.

For a first head, I think you've achieved alot of the important parts pretty well, I've gained a real appreciation for how hard character modeling can really be... its not nearly as easy as I once thought. As you noted, this chick definitely has some issues, so let me point out possible spots to fix up (in the spirit of being helpful). You may alreayd now all this so bear with me :p

Most of the poroportional issues I see are with respect to the eye size. The nose seems like it could be a tad longer and definitely wider. Also the wings on the sides of the nose should be taller. She could have a bit more pronouced brow close to the nasal bridge and should have that 'puff' of fat above the eye at the outer part. Also the jaw could use some widening and the cheeks should be brought more forward. There's a large bump at the center of her head between the eyebrows -- should be almost flat in there.

If you don't already have this link, check out http://www.fineart.sk/ cause its the perfect resource for example pics... its a gold mine

Here's a pic that I thought you might find useful, which I hadn't seen on fineart.sk. I scanned it out of a book I have. You can proportion your head based on 'eye widths' (an unusual unit of length) Please download it as soon as you can so I can delete it from my drive space.

After you get your head set up, you can then use your ladys head as another base unit of length for getting her body set up (if you intend to go that far), like ofr instance:
