bump mapping
Hi all
In my ongoing learning curve with blender and modelling I have begun experimenting with bump maps.
Here's a peek at my first effort. It's nearly finished and has been quite a fun project to work on.
Enjoy

Re: bump mapping
I once made an incredible sphere in blender. I then attempted a more complicated item, a cube, but failed miserably. I refuse to open the program.
I agree that the light setup is not flattering.

LOL! Sounds like every one of my attempts at modelling!
Hmmm... you folks are making blender sound mighty intimidating to the noob.
Psycoderek,
I like the model design. Looks like something out of Terminator 2.

Yeah, what he said (both parts. ) On the lighting, do you have the shadows turned on? If not, I'd suggest that. Also, perhaps some colored lights and more highs and lows, intensity wise, to show off the bump mapped details would help, IMO.

Re: bump mapping
Thanks for that. Very useful info in my drive to improve. I will relight the model when it's done. I am only just getting started on Bump mapping for detail and the road will be a long one until i get as near to perfect as i can. All suggestions are greatfully accepted and i thank you. I love people to critisise my work so that I can improve in those areas that I am weak at.
Many thanks
Rod

Re: bump mapping
Hi sll.
Added arials to finish off this model and relit for the test render. I was going to add more but the parts i built made the model look too cluttered so i left it to just arials. Eventually this model will be put in one of my Bryce renders but here's a test for now. I agree with the comments about the lighting and had a go at trying new lighting options in blender.
Enjoy.

Blender is actually a very nice tool but has an interface that is very different from many of the commercial tools many folks have. Once you get your head wrapped around the interface I am sure you could create some great stuff.

Much better. What I thought may have been odd polygon errors before I can now see are fender skirts Good job.

Re: bump mapping
Yeah, that looks a lot better. It's amazing what a little lighting can do. The tank looks pretty cool. A lot of people who are first experimenting with bump mapping tend to overdo it (I know I did ) but you've got a nice look to yours. It's enough to add detail but not too much.

Re: bump mapping
thanks everyone. No definitely not poly errors. That shape was deliberate. The whole part made from a single cube extracting here and reshapine individual vertices to get the shape. i am goint to try a futuristic looking Hovercraft next. i agree that bump mapping can be overdone and as a newbie to that process i steered clear of excessive mapping. I think that it's enough to give some detail without distracting from the overall look of the model. Over time I will improve but it's great to know that I am moving in the right direction. The lightin tips were a great help and that is something I wil work on in the future.
