As for what I thought they used, I would have thought they'd migrated to one of the other industry standards, like many of the SFX houses have...

Lightwave *is* the FX standard program. Foundation Imaging used LW on Babylon 5 and Star Trek, as did EdenFX, and when Zoic was formed after FI went bye-bye, they used LW on the nuBG, of which Blood and Chrome is
The other commonly used program is Maya.
