Default Lights have stopped obeying physics!

Help! This area light isn't casting shadows anymore! All shadow options are checked on the object itself, the light is outside the object geometry, and all raytracing options are enabled.

Much appreciated.

first thing would be to check that the object is set to be actually affected by that light

Did that. Basically, all the glaringly obvious stuff -- objects being set to be affected, object shadow options, raytracing options, light shadow options -- has been checked time and again. I spent about an hour or so with Warrior trying to figure it out -- even sent him the scene file and object, but it left him stumped too

Will do.

It happens with any raytraced light put there, BTW, not just the area light. The only time that the problem disappears is with shadow mapping.
